In the painting from 1874, the artist painted himself in a Polish costume, which is a kind of manifesto. "I am a Pole and a Jew and I want to work for both of them, God willing," wrote Maurycy Gottlieb from Drohobych in correspondence. In his painting, we observe a constant intertwining of Polish and Jewish threads, because the topic of mutual relations between the two nations was one of the subjects of the young artist's reflection. Gottlieb, after studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Kraków and Munich, returned to Kraków in the spring of 1879 to continue his studies with Jan Matejko. It was Matejko, with his vision of Polish history and the artist's responsibility towards society, who was Gottlieb's master.
